Our hearts are with our public interest tech and open data colleagues in the Los Angeles region. If we hear about how we can provide mutual aid, we will share it in the BetaNYC #general slack channel.
Happy New Year, Happy Lunar New Year, and new state legislative session! Starting next week, we will modify our communications and add a streamlined weekly newsletter to your inbox. Those of you on LinkedIn have gotten a preview of our new newsletter. Why? As the only NYC-focused public interest tech newsletter, we are dedicated to keeping you informed. Additionally, we are in a critical time with a federal government transition, citywide elections, and social media sites removing fact-checking or moderation. (By the way, danah boyd has a great op-ed on this.)
Collectively, we are facing a tumultuous year, and you have a unique opportunity to shape the future. By staying focused and informed, we can break through the era of misinformation. Our New Year’s resolution is to be a communal place that provides you with accurate and reliable information.
As we’ve said, optimism, faith, truth, service, and love are how we build a more perfect union. And we do this in our community! Borough Presidents and the Department of Education have encouraged residents to participate in their respective hyper-local bodies. On Monday, you can apply to be in consideration to serve on the city’s Community and City Education Councils or CECs. Read more about this process in Chalkbeat NY. Additionally, community boards help shape agency resources delivered to your community. Applications are currently open for Brooklyn and Queens and are open year-round in Staten Island. (Manhattan and The Bronx will open shortly. Read last year’s primer from THE CITY.)
Later this year, there will be citywide elections. In the meantime, YOU have a unique opportunity to engage with citywide candidates. If you scour Reddit or Bluesky, you will find opportunities to meet candidates in your neighborhood at low-dollar fundraisers. Also, many of these campaigns are desperate for volunteers. If you’re interested in shaping our citywide elections, now is the time to learn about the candidates, volunteer, and attend fundraisers. Early voting starts on Saturday, June 14th, and Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 24th. If you’re over 18 and a registered NYC voter, consider working the polls.
On the last bright note of the New Year, CONGESTION PRICING IS THE LAW! After years of advocacy, we will finally see dedicated funding to modernize signals and increase accessibility. And according to initial traffic data, the program has ALREADY started to alleviate congestion in Manhattan. Be sure to catch our Legislative Updates section for additional news recap of this historic event!
Sending you love and light. Take care,
BetaNYC ❤️
