Welcome to #CodeAcrossNYC 2014.

This is @BetaNYC’s second annual Code Across. This is a global day of action in partnership with International Open Data Day (#OpenDataDay) and Code for America’s Code Across (#CodeAcross).

For the last eight weeks, NYC’s civic hackers have explored NYC’s open data and developed projects to demonstrated the power open data to NY City Council, their staff, and Community Boards. Hon. Gale Brewer and Hon. Ben Kallos will kick off NYC 30 hours prototyping and curriculum writing.

Here are a few things you MUST know for the two days.

  • Register: http://bit.ly/CodeAcrossNYC2014

  • Location: NYU’s Varick Street Incubator, 137 Varick Street 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10013.

  • Bring Gov issued ID to get into the building.

  • To win a prize, you will have to submit your project name and description before 8:00 pm on Saturday.

  • Our event hashtag is #CodeAcrossNYC and our irc.freenode.net channel is #BetaNYC. The international hashtags are #CodeAcross & #OpenDataDay.

  • Finally, this event is a safe space. If you feel uncomfortable about anything, say something to an event staff / organizer.


Desired Outcomes for Code Across NYC 2014:

  • Create tools that help city council members and community boards understand the City’s open data.

  • Prototype tools, dashboards, and curriculum for NY City Council, their staff, and NYC Community Boards.


Prizes will be awarded to the best prototypes:

  • Best Overall Civic App

  • Most Creative Use of Open Data

  • Best Visualization of NYC Open Data

  • Best User Experience

  • Best City Council/Community Board App

  • Best Citizen Engagement App

Saturday Schedule:

10:00 am – Doors open for breakfast

11:00 am – Event kickoff

  • Introduction to event, group introductions

12:00 pm – 12:30 pm – “Our Civic Hacking Stories”

  • Hon. Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough President & NYC’s open data godmother

  • Hon. Ben Kallos, NY City Councilmember & civic hacker

12:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Project Hacking

8:00 pm – Wrap up and project name & discription deadline.


Sunday Schedule:

11:00 am – Doors open for breakfast and hacking

11:00 am – 2:00 pm – Project hacking

2:00 pm – Project submissions due

2:15 pm – Project presentations

3:30 pm – End of show
